Which user type am I?
Choose "Low User" if:
- You are signing up your primary place of residence, and
- Your annual kWh consumption is lower than the threshold in your area of the map shown below
Choose "Standard User" if:
- You are signing up a place of residence which is not your primary address, or
- Your annual kWh consumption is higher than the threshold in your area of the map shown below
If you don't know what your annual kWh consumption is, choose "Low User" if your bill is on average less than $160 per month.
Why do you have different tariffs for Low and Standard Users?
New Zealand legislation requires electricity networks and retailers to offer a Low Fixed Charge option to residential electricity consumers at their primary place of residence.
Many New Zealand electricity networks store the user type for your ICP on the electricity registry. But in some networks this isn't the case, and these consumers need to choose a user type at the point of signing up based on the amount of electricity they consume in a year. Previous electricity bills are the best source for this information.
Both Standard and Low tariffs need to be exactly the same cost at the threshold (shown in the map above), but if a Standard User chooses a Low User tariff, or vice versa, the cost of electricity for this consumer will work out to be more expensive than if they had selected the right tariff for their annual electricity consumption.
In some circumstances electricity networks and retailers may be granted exemptions from offering a Low User tariff. Where a Network has such an exemption, energyclubnz has requested the same exemption by the Minister of Energy and Resources in order to pass-on the network charges to our members as part of our "electricity at cost" customer promise.

At energyclubnz we understand this can be confusing, after all, most people don't have to deal with the electricity industry more than a few times a year at the most!
